The classic half-day trip. Garni Temple is a perfectly preserved Hellenistic temple from the 1st century AD, sitting on a cliff above the Azat River gorge. Geghard Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is carved directly into the rock face. The road is fully paved and suitable for any car.
2. Yerevan → Lake Sevan
Distance: 65 km
Lake Sevan is one of the largest alpine lakes in the world, sitting at 1,900 meters altitude. The drive from Yerevan is an easy highway trip. Visit Sevanavank monastery on the peninsula, swim in summer, and eat the famous Sevan trout (ishkhan) at lakeside restaurants.
3. Yerevan → Dilijan National Park
Distance: 100 km
Known as the "Armenian Switzerland," Dilijan is a forested mountain town surrounded by national park. The main road is excellent, but exploring forest trails and monasteries like Haghartsin and Goshavank benefits from an SUV or crossover.
4. Yerevan → Tatev Monastery via Wings of Tatev
Distance: 260 km
Tatev Monastery sits on a cliff edge at the end of the world's longest reversible aerial tramway. The drive through Areni wine country and the dramatic Vorotan Gorge is spectacular. The last stretch involves mountain roads where an SUV provides significant comfort.

Distance: 40 km
The most iconic view in Armenia: Khor Virap monastery with Mount Ararat (5,137 m) towering behind it. A short, easy drive on good roads. Best visited early morning when the mountain is most visible.
7. Yerevan → Noravank Monastery
Distance: 130 km
Noravank sits in a red-rock canyon that looks like a slice of Utah. The road winds through Areni — Armenia's wine region — where you can stop to taste local wines at family-run cellars. The monastery itself is a 13th-century masterpiece.
8. Yerevan → Gyumri
Distance: 120 km
Armenia's second city has a distinct character — 19th-century architecture, thriving arts scene, and some of the best food in the country. The highway is modern and fast. Gyumri makes an excellent base for exploring the north.
9. Yerevan → Tbilisi, Georgia
