Yerevan is a walkable city in its centre, but a car opens up everything else — the outer neighbourhoods, the surrounding countryside, and the dozens of historical sites scattered within a few hours of the capital. If you are renting a car during your visit, here is what to expect on Yerevan's streets.

What Is Driving in Yerevan Like?

Yerevan is easier to drive in than many capital cities. The road network was built around wide Soviet-era avenues that radiate outward from the centre, connected by a series of ring roads. Most destinations within the city are reachable in 15 to 25 minutes outside of peak periods.

That said, driving here has its own character. Lane discipline is relaxed, other drivers may change lanes or merge without much warning, and pedestrians sometimes cross outside marked crossings. None of this is unmanageable — just drive attentively and expect the unexpected.

Understanding Yerevan's Streets

The city centre is anchored by Republic Square, with major avenues like Mashtots, Abovyan, and Baghramyan extending outward. Many central streets are one-way, which can be confusing on a first visit if you are not following navigation.

Roundabouts are common at major intersections. If you are unfamiliar with roundabout driving, stay alert and yield to traffic already in the circle.

Traffic in Yerevan

Traffic is heaviest during morning and evening commuting periods, roughly between 8–10 AM and 5–7 PM on weekdays. The main arteries — Mashtots, Baghramyan, Arshakunyats — can slow considerably during these windows.

Outside of peak hours, traffic flows well. Weekends are noticeably quieter, especially in the morning. If you are planning a day trip out of the city, leaving early on a weekend avoids the densest traffic.

Double-parked vehicles occasionally narrow lanes on busy commercial streets. Give yourself a bit of extra patience in the centre.

Parking in Yerevan

Central Yerevan has paid parking zones covering the busiest streets. Signage marks the zones, and parking attendants or automated systems manage payment. Check the posted rules and payment method when you park, as the system can vary by area.

Outside the strict centre, street parking is generally easier to find and often free. Shopping malls and major hotels typically provide their own parking facilities.

Navigation Tips for Visitors

Reliable navigation makes a significant difference, especially in the first day or two. Use a mapping application with turn-by-turn directions — this handles the one-way streets and frequent name changes on smaller roads far better than paper maps or memory.

Download an offline map of Armenia before your trip. Coverage is generally good in Yerevan, but having an offline backup means you are never stuck without directions if your connection drops.

Pay attention to road signs, particularly for lane assignments approaching busy intersections. Some turns require being in a specific lane well in advance.

Driving from Zvartnots Airport to Yerevan

Zvartnots International Airport sits about 12 kilometres west of Yerevan's centre. The drive into the city uses a well-maintained highway and takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic.

The airport road is straightforward — there is essentially one main route into the city, and navigation will guide you directly. If you are picking up a rental car at Zvartnots Airport, you can be on the road within minutes of clearing arrivals.

Getting Out of Yerevan

A rental car becomes especially valuable for the destinations surrounding the capital. Several of Armenia's most popular sites are short drives from Yerevan on good roads:

Khor Virap — 40 minutes south, with the iconic view of Mount Ararat
